Clinical course of laryngeal papillomatosis

چکیده
Laryngeal papillomatosis (LP) can have various clinical courses. Malignant transformation is rare. The purpose of the present study was to correlate the clinical course of the disease with the histopathologic findings of the surgically removed papillomas. In the series of 123 patients, abnormal or atypical epithelial hyperplasia of the papillomas removed at the first surgical procedure appeared to be the most frequent histopathologic finding associated with the recurrent disease. Malignant transformation was detected in three patients with adult type of recurrent LP. Laryngeal carcinoma appeared five times more often in the adult patients with atypical hyperplasia than in the adults without it. D 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

BACKGROUND Recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis is caused by the human papilloma virus and characterized by multiple exophytic lesions of the vocal tract; it is a benign disease, but one that tends to recur after removal of growths. Due to the nature of the disease, alternative treatment strategies have focused on antiviral injection at lesion sites that eliminate repeated surgical procedures. Th...

The course of human papilloma virus (HPV)-induced recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis (RLP) is variable and unpredictable. Some patients experience spontaneous remission, while others suffer from aggressive growth with dire consequences. Unfortunately, HPV DNA can persist in mucosa after treatment and can be reactivated under immunosuppressive conditions. For this reason, these benign tumors are...
متن کاملRecurrent laryngeal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with positive anaplastic lymphoma kinase mimicking recurrent respiratory papillomatosis: a case report
Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the larynx is an unusual lesion, particularly in the pediatric age group. Laryngeal IMTs in children follow a benign clinical course with reports of only rare recurrences and no metastases. Although anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) has been associated with IMTs, there is only one pediatric laryngeal IMT reported to be ALK-positive with immunohistochem...
